2 Peter 3.3-13

3 τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες ὅτι ἐλεύσονται ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐν ἐμπαιγμονῇ ἐμπαῖκται κατὰ τὰς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας αὐτῶν πορευόμενοι 4 καὶ λέγοντες· ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ ἐπαγγελία τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ; ἀφ᾽ ἧς γὰρ οἱ πατέρες ἐκοιμήθησαν, πάντα οὕτως διαμένει ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς κτίσεως. 

5 λανθάνει γὰρ αὐτοὺς τοῦτο θέλοντας ὅτι οὐρανοὶ ἦσαν ἔκπαλαι καὶ γῆ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ δι᾽ ὕδατος συνεστῶσα τῷ τοῦ θεοῦ λόγῳ, 6 δι᾽ ὧν ὁ τότε κόσμος ὕδατι κατακλυσθεὶς ἀπώλετο. 7 οἱ δὲ νῦν οὐρανοὶ καὶ ἡ γῆ τῷ αὐτῷ λόγῳ τεθησαυρισμένοι εἰσὶν πυρὶ τηρούμενοι εἰς ἡμέραν κρίσεως καὶ ἀπωλείας τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνθρώπων.

8 Ἓν δὲ τοῦτο μὴ λανθανέτω ὑμᾶς, ἀγαπητοί, ὅτι μία ἡμέρα παρὰ κυρίῳ ὡς χίλια ἔτη καὶ χίλια ἔτη ὡς ἡμέρα μία. 9 οὐ βραδύνει κύριος τῆς ἐπαγγελίας, ὥς τινες βραδύτητα ἡγοῦνται· ἀλλὰ μακροθυμεῖ εἰς ὑμᾶς μὴ βουλόμενός τινας ἀπολέσθαι ἀλλὰ πάντας εἰς μετάνοιαν χωρῆσαι. 10 ἥξει δὲ ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης, ἐν ᾗ οἱ οὐρανοὶ ῥοιζηδὸν παρελεύσονται, στοιχεῖα δὲ καυσούμενα λυθήσεται, καὶ γῆ καὶ τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ ἔργα εὑρεθήσεται. 11 τούτων οὖν πάντων λυομένων ποταποὺς δεῖ ὑπάρχειν ὑμᾶς ἐν ἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαις 12 προσδοκῶντας καὶ σπεύδοντας τὴν παρουσίαν τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμέρας, δι᾽ ἣν οὐρανοὶ πυρούμενοι λυθήσονται καὶ στοιχεῖα καυσούμενα τήκεται; 13 καινοὺς δὲ οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινὴν κατὰ τὸ ἐπάγγελμα αὐτοῦ προσδοκῶμεν, ἐν οἷς δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖ.

3 Above all, understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own desires. 

4 They will say, “Where is this promised coming? Ever since the patriarchs died, everything carries on the same since creation began.” 5 They wilfully forget that the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was formed from water and through water by God’s word. 6 By these waters the world then was flooded and destroyed. 7 The present heavens and earth are reserved by the same word for fire, kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not forget this one thing, beloved: for the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. No, he is patient towards you, not wanting anyone to perish, but that everyone  come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a roar, the elements will burn up and be destroyed, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way,  therefore, what kind of people should you be? With holy lives and godly deeds  12 you should look forward to the coming of the day of God and speed it along. That day will bring the fiery destruction of the heavens, and the elements will be scorched and melt. 13 But in accordance with his promise, we look forward to new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed, about those who are “asleep”, in case you grieve like others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, then we will also we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you this: 

We who are left alive until the coming of the Lord shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a command, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet-blast, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are left alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
